About DFS Marketing

DFS Marketing is an independent insurance marketing organization (IMO) that distributes annuity and life insurance products through independent agents. The company is based in Conroe, Texas.

DFS was founded in 2011 by Julian Dougharty, who has a long expertise in traditional, index-linked, multi-year guaranteed, and immediate annuities. His goal was to help independent insurance agents reach more prospects, increase business, and ultimately earn more money. The company currently has more than 2,500 insurance agents.

In March 2021, DFS Marketing was acquired by AmeriLife, a national leader in developing, marketing, and distributing annuity, life insurance, and health insurance solutions.

Products Sold And Market Focus

DFS Marketing focuses on the sale of annuities and life insurance, including fixed indexed annuities and indexed universal life insurance. It targets primarily pre-retiree, baby boomer, and senior markets.

DFS partners with top-rated national companies such as AIG, Sagicor, Lincoln Financial Group, Foresters Financial, Americo, Pacific Life, Assurity, American National, and others, to provide a wide range of insurance and annuity products to their customers.

How Leads Work

DFS Marketing website doesn’t offer any information about leads. As a new agent, you will most likely have to start by doing insurance lead generation on your own through mailers, cold calling, your agency website, referrals, and social media, for example.

DFS believes that video and social media are the future of advertising. They will help you establish your online presence and market your business by providing the following services:

    • Appointment setting webpage

    • Social media support (Facebook and Linkedin)

    • Social media page design

    • Free social media support desk

    • Illimited free use of the DFS video production studio

    • Brand support and design

    • Graphic design

    • Backend office support, and

    • Free e-books for appointments.

If you choose to subscribe to the DFS Annuity Boss service, you will get your authority website with fresh content, news articles, press releases, and helpful information to set you apart from your competition. The agency will also push the content from your website through your social media channels as part of their subscription service.

In addition, DFS offers various marketing webinars to help agents succeed in their businesses.

How Getting Paid Works

The DFS website gives no specifics on agent commissions. However, as an independent insurance agent, you may expect your earnings to be commission-based. You can generally earn a much higher percentage of your commission than captive agents.

As of March 2021, the average annual salary of an independent insurance agent in the US is $91,323 a year.

Is It A Scam, MLM, Pyramid Scheme?

As an insurance agent, you want to avoid scams and make sure that you are working with a reputable insurance company. The good news is, DFS Marketing is a legitimate organization that has gained trust from thousands of independent agents over the past decade.

DFS is not a pyramid scheme or an MLM (multi-level marketing) organization. In other words, you are not expected to recruit other agents as part of the hierarchy, buy inventory, or participate in expensive mandatory training activities.

My Thoughts

Now that you know a little more about how a career selling insurance with DFS Marketing works, I’d like to share my views as an experienced insurance agency owner.

Ownership of Your Book of Business

A book of business is the list of all the insurance policies that you’ve written. As a new agent, you will quickly realize the importance of owning your book of business. This means that you own the cash flow renewal income from the policies you sold.

While you may enjoy working with your agency, at some point you might want to switch to another company. In this case, you want to be certain that your clients and your business remain yours. That way, you can continue to work with them in the future and keep your renewal commissions.

Some agencies take the renewal income from your business when you leave. This can be very damaging to your career.

Whether you’re thinking of joining DFS Marketing or another company, I highly recommend that you confirm that you will own your book of business from the start. The terminology we use for the full ownership of a book of business is “100% first-day vested.”
