About BackNine Insurance

BackNine Insurance, established by Mark Tattersall in 2003, is a brokerage general agency for life insurance, long term care insurance, disability insurance, and fixed/indexed annuity products.

It has been a part of the CPS Insurance Services affiliated agencies since 2010. The company is headquartered in Westlake Village, California.

BackNine is non-captive and doesn’t sell any fixed products, but operates as a full-service insurance brokerage.

It represents more than 50 carriers including Equitrust, John Hancock, Liberty Life, Mutual of Omaha, and Transamerica.

How selling with BackNine works

BackNine Insurance is focused on technology and has developed its own platform for insurance agents named BOSS (Back Office Support System).

This back office support gives agents the possibility to easily get in touch with the team and allows them to chat with their marketing manager and case manager at any time.

It offers how-to videos, quote tools that help sell more insurance online, and quote requests to see what product may be the best fit for the client.

More On The BOSS System

The BOSS contracting feature allows agents to complete the entire contracting process online. It is quick and easy to get appointed with any carrier.

Agents can also track their commissions, manage their cases from start to finish, view case requirements, set and view sales goals, and run quotes. What’s more, agents can easily integrate software to their own website.

The software also serves as an educational resource. It offers educational webinars and provides useful sales ideas and marketing tools.

As for agencies, the BOSS portal offers a global view of all the brokers and their appointments, cases, commissions, and production. It allows them to set up hierarchies and delegate commission schedules.

BackNine leads

BackNine has introduced an email capture feature in order to improve lead conversion. Before the customers can see any rates, they will be asked for their email address.

Once they provide the email address, the agent is automatically emailed the new lead’s contact information. The customer’s information will appear on the BOSS account, and the customer will at the same time be able to view the rates.

BackNine commissions

BackNine doesn’t disclose how its insurance agents generate leads.

However, as an independent insurance agent, you will most probably be paid a small salary with a commission and a possible bonus.

Is it a scam, MLM, or pyramid scheme?

BackNine Insurance is not a scam but a reputable agency with over three decades of experience in the life insurance industry. It has a superior A+ rating from BBB.

It is not a multi-level marketing (MLM) business opportunity or pyramid scheme.

This means that it doesn’t have multiple layers of agents, mentors, and trainers. It is, therefore, not suitable for agents who are primarily looking to recruit.

My Thoughts

Now that you know a little more about how BackNine operates, allow me to provide some helpful tips as an experienced agent and agency owner since 2011.

Leads Are Your Life Source

If you’ve never sold insurance before, you need to understand that success lies mainly in your ability to present your sales opportunity to a significant mass of prospects.

Without enough viable leads, you’ll quickly run out of opportunities to sell insurance, leaving you one of the 92% of agents that fail within the first 12 months.

I mention this because it’s essential that you have consistent access to prospects every week! Whether that’s cold calling, lead generation through paid advertisements, referral networking, or another viable lead strategy.

Leads are super important!

Your first question when you look for an insurance agency to join should be regarding their lead system. How do they teach agents to generate insurance leads?

Once you know how they operate, you also need to decide if their strategy will work for you.

For instance, do you have the necessary capital required to invest in the LEAP program? Or, if you’re following a referral generation strategy, do you feel comfortable trying to sell insurance to your friends and family members?

All lead generation methods work to a certain extent. What makes the difference is your commitment to that method.
