One of the main advantages of selling Medicare Supplements is that it is much simpler to learn than selling Medicare Advantage, an “all in one” alternative to original Medicare.

It is also arguably simpler to market and sell, and ultimately to make a profit, by helping seniors evaluate and change their existing plans.

To sell Medicare Advantage you have to get:

• • An annual AHIP certification, which acts as proof that you have completed the required Medicare training courses. It takes 8 hours to complete and costs $170.

• • A separate certification with each contracted carrier.

At the same time, selling Medicare Supplements requires no training and no certification.

Only a health insurance license is needed in order to sell Medicare Supplements in all states. The exception is North Carolina where a special Medicare Supplement license is also required.

A non-resident license can be easily obtained online in every state where you intend to sell insurance over the phone.

Unlike Medicare Advantage, there are no restrictions on a specific time frame for selling a Medicare Supplement plan.
